Jodie Foster just released a commentary on the up-and-coming Generation Z, criticizing the generation’s workplace habits and overall disposition. Here’s what you need to know.
Known for her roles in Nyad and True Detective, Jodie Foster’s video went viral — garnering both positive and negative attention from her virtual audience.
What did Jodie Foster say?
In the video, Jodie Foster was quoted saying: “They’re really annoying, especially in the workplace,” Foster said. “They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m going to come in at 10:30am.’ Or, like in emails, I’ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?’”
Many audience members commented on the bite, unsure whether Foster was joking or not with her quips. Others chimed in, agreeing with her commentary about the attitudes and experiences with the up-and-coming generation.
Comments were varied by the individual commentators’ experiences, with many quotes focusing on the seemingly inattentive and relaxed attitudes of the youth in the office. Others took a different approach, disagreeing and stating that they found that newer office members have far fewer writing skills than previous generations did — stating that few people ever wanted to correct or re-do their work when it was done in error.
The other side of the argument: Does Gen Z have better balance?
While there were plenty of critics in the comments, there were a near-equal amount of people praising Generation Z for rising above the “hustle” culture and choosing instead to preserve their mental and physical health.
Others acknowledged that a generation gap could be to blame for Jodie’s comments, suggesting that the star might not be used to the “new normal” that has become evident as the generations have swapped roles.
Less commonly, others were seen taking responsibility in the comment section (which seems to rarely happen online), stating that their style of management and prior mentorship may have contributed to the issues that Foster was calling out in the original post.
Foster didn’t just stop there, however. She went on to eventually express admiration for the up-and-coming generation, appreciating their willingness and ability to challenge gender norms that could otherwise limit the lives and prosperity of others.
Foster specifically called out the acceptance of Bella Ramsey, most commonly known for her role in the Last of Us series. The actresses had recently spoken regarding a formal introduction at an Elle event, with Foster requesting Bella to introduce her and represent a new standard that challenged traditional femininity.
“The organizers are very proud of themselves because they got every ethnicity, and I’m like, ‘yeah,’ but…there are other ways of being a woman and it’s important for people to see that. And Bella, who gave the best speech, was wearing the most perfect suit, beautifully tailored, and a middle parting and no makeup,” she gushed to MSN.
