TikTok and social media users are calling the Oscars anti-feminist after Margot Robbie was excluded from the list of best female actresses for her role as Barbie.
Yet, Whoopi Goldberg hit back at critics, claiming not everyone gets a prize, suggesting other women deserve the trophy ahead of Robbie.
Academy Award Nominations Revealed
The 96th annual Oscars nominations were released last week and caused a lot of controversy. Even with the widespread success of Barbie, Greta Gerwig didn’t receive a nomination for Best Director.
A further shock came when Margot Robbie was left out of the list of nominees for best actor, even after a well-received portrayal of “Barbie” in last year’s movie of the same name. This has led some to claim the decision is anti-feminist.
Nominations for Barbie
The 2023 hit, “Barbie,” received eight nominations for this year’s Oscars.
While they’ll compete for the best-adapted screenplay, best picture, best costume design, best original song, and a handful of best-supporting actresses and actors, Robbie will receive no credit for her portrayal of Barbie.
TikTokers Claim Oscars Is Sexist
Robbie’s snub has led many users of TikTok to claim the decision is rooted in anti-feminism.

X-Users Lash Out at Academy Awards
Users on X also spoke about the decision to snub Robbie, with @rhysr97 writing, “Completely proving the point of the movie in 20 f****ng 24 you cannot make this up.”
“Wait, Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn’t get nominated for Barbie?! And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?! Way to justify the literal plot,” wrote another X user.
Sexsim in the Oscar Nomaintions
The idea of anti-feminism is centered upon Ryan Gosling being nominated for Best Supporting Actor, while Gerwig and Robbie missed out on an Oscar nomination.
However, Robbie wasn’t beaten to the spot by males. Instead, five other female actors were nominated as opposed to her, leading many to argue against any form of sexism.
Whoopie Goldberg Speaks on the Situation
During an episode of “The View,” Whoopie Goldberg and co-hosts Joy Behar, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sunny Hostin, and Sara Haines spoke about the situation.
Goldberg argued there’s no grand conspiracy behind Robbie and Gerwig missing out on Academy Award nominations.
There Are Winners and Losers
Speaking about Robbie’s so-called snub, Goldberg said, “Everybody doesn’t win,”
“They’re not snubs, and that’s what I want to sort of point out. And it’s not the elites. It’s the entire family of the Academy Awards who vote for best picture nominations,” she added.
It’s a Tough Business
Throughout her conversation on “The View,” Goldberg took a strong stance against those who claimed Robbie was mistreated.
“You don’t get everything that you want to get,” Goldberg said.
Not Everyone Gets a Trophy
Finally, Goldberg explained not everyone can leave the awards ceremony with an Oscar.
“That’s what you have to keep in mind. Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting,” she said.
Gosling Unhappy with the Decision to Snub Robbie
Ryan Gosling has since argued the movie would not have reached the heights it has without Greta and Robbie.
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said.
Too Much Talent to Snub
Golsing finished by expressing his disappointment with the decision to snub Greta and Robbie.
“No recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling added.
