The Trump campaign has revealed their fast food and catering spending figures for May of this year.
Team Trump has spent over $35,000 dollars on fast food in May.
Where Was The Money Spent?
According to Donald J. Trump For President 2024, $36,780 was spent on dining out from such chains as Starbucks, Chick Fil-A, and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Far and away the biggest chunk of that total was spent at McDonalds.
Exact Figures
The Trump campaign spent over $3,900 dollars at sandwich chain Jimmy Johns, $1,700 dollars at Wendy’s, $1,500 at Dunkin Donuts, and $3,140 at Chick Fil-A during May.
With more than $4,700 spent, McDonalds was easily where the Trump campaign spent the most money.
Doing The Math
Mcdonalds revealed in May that the average cost of a Big Mac meal, which includes fries, a drink, and the titular sandwich, was $9.29
Dividing the $4,700 dollars that the Trump campaign spent at Mcdonalds by that average cost of the meal and we see that the campaign could very well have bought over 500 Big Mac meals with this expenditure.
Media Focus On Trump’s Diet
Much has been made in the media of former President Trump’s relationship with, and love of, fast food and junk food generally.
In 2017 the New York Times reported that the former president drinks 12 cans of Diet Coke a day.
Trump’s Unabashed Love For Fast Food
One of the most famous instances of Trump displaying his love for fast food happened on Jan. 14, 2019 when he held a reception for the national champion Clemson Tigers, which was entirely catered with fast food, all of which Trump announced he was personally paying for.
In his novel “_Let Trump Be Trump_,” the former president’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski wrote after a 14 to 16 hour fast Trump would often eat two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, two Big Macs, and a small chocolate shake from McDonalds.
Overall Trump Campaign Spending
During the same reporting period in which the Trump campaign spent $36,780 on food and drink, they spent nearly 8 million dollars in total on many different services, including travel, accommodations, legal services, and payroll.
In this same period the campaign received over $75 million in donations.
Trump Not Only Candidate Who Enjoys Junk Food
While Trump’s penchant for consuming junk food is well known, his political opponent Joe Biden himself is known for having a sweet tooth himself, and largely just for one item- ice cream.
Whether it is joining Seth Meyers on the campaign trail for a cone, or the many times he was photographed eating ice cream as Vice President, President Biden clearly loves the frozen treat (almost) as much as Trump loves his Cokes and Big Macs.
Biden Campaign Food Expenses
President Biden’s official campaign, Biden For President, has also revealed their food spending figures, though for June instead of May.
The campaign to re-elect the president spent more than $32,100 on food and drink in just 17 transactions in June. This money was often spent at independent BBQ restaurants and steakhouses, including Dragon Pig, Tonic Seafood and Steak, and Asadero.
Overall Biden Campaign Spending
During the same period that the Biden campaign spent more than $32,100 on food and drink they spent nearly $31 million on total expenses.
In this same period the Biden campaign raised nearly $38 million in donations.
