The 2024 Emmy Nominations Have Been Announced
FX’s “Shogun” leads in the drama category with 25 nominations, and “The Bear,” also FX, leads in the comedy category with 23, a record for a comedy program.
An Incredible Year For FX
Despite coming in second in total nominations, this year’s biggest Emmy nomination success story is the FX Network, with a total of 93 nominations, their largest haul ever and up from just 11 last year.
Both the aforementioned “Shogun” and “The Bear” air on FX, as do fan favorites “What We Do In The Shadows,” “Reservation Dogs,” and “Fargo,” all nominated multiple times.
Netflix Has A Very Good Year
Despite not airing “Shogun” nor “The Bear,” Netflix raked in a considerable amount of Emmy nominations as a network this year, with 107 total nominations.
Critically acclaimed series like “Reindeer Games,” “Ripley,” and “The Crown” helped to bring Netflix’s nominations into triple digits, the most for any network or streamer this year.
HBO In A Rare Third Place
TV giant HBO, the network with easily the most Emmy nominations last year, fell to third place in 2024.
“True Detective: Night Country” and “Hacks” helped HBO bring their haul to a respectable 91 nominations.
A Record Breaking Year For “The Bear”
FX’s “The Bear” has, just barely, set a record for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy program, with 23 nominations.
It is narrowly breaking the record set by NBC sitcom “30 Rock,” which got nominated 22 times in 2009.
“Shogun” Sets Records Of Its Own
FX’s Japanese language epic “Shogun” garnered an Emmy nomination in virtually every major drama category this year, and nearly all of these nominations are in categories that have never before seen a Japanese nominee.
This would never have happened had “Shogun” creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo not decided to add additional seasons to what was once planned to be a limited series. As an ongoing series it qualified for nominations in many more Emmy categories.
Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis Make Emmy History
Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis have become the first Indigenous actresses ever nominated for an Emmy.
They were both nominated for Outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, with Gladstone nominated for Hulu’s “Under The Bridge” and Reis nominated for HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.”
Old School Stars Make A Comeback
Some of television’s classic stars were nominated for Emmys this year, including Carol Burnett for Apple’s “Palm Royale” and Dick van Dyke for his CBS special “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic.”
Other major stars nominated include Meryl Streep for Hulu’s “Only Murders In The Building” and Jodie Foster for “True Detective: Night Country.”
Oscar Winners/ Emmy Nominees
Oscar winners Robert Downey Jr. (Best Actor for “Oppenheimer”) and Da’vine Joy Randolph (Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers”) are both nominated for Emmys this year, for HBO’s “The Sympathizer” and “Only Murders In The Building,” respectively.
Oscar winner Emma Stone was thought to be a frontrunner for Emmy consideration for her role in Showtime’s “The Curse,” but was ultimately not recognized.
When and Where To Watch The Emmys
We will have to wait a couple months to find out which of these television shows, actors, and actresses come away with an Emmy.
The Emmys air September 15th at 8 PM EDT on ABC.
