The year was 1985, the month was June.
The Goonies was an immediate success at the box office and has since become a cult classic. So much so that it has been preserved by he Library of Congress for being culturally and historically significant.
Rumours of a Sequel
Rumours of a sequel to the classic film have been hanging around for years.
But plans were never finalised, rumours were confirmed and denied many times over and it seemed like it was never going to happen.
Goonies Director Passed Away
The Goonies director, Richard Donner, passed away in 2021.
At that point it seemed like a sequel would be impossible.
“It Would Ruin Everything”
Corey Feldman who played Mouth in the 1985 movie once said “It would ruin everything” if a sequel was made.
Although he clarified his position on The Drew Barrymore Show last year by saying that before Richard Donner died, the cast really wanted to make a sequel and even presented ideas to Donner and Spielberg’s assistant, but nothing ever went ahead.
Sequel Confirmed
Well now, at long last, the waiting is over for the many fans of The Goonies.
It was confirmed yesterday that a sequel is indeed going to be made, with many of the same cast members.
Don’t Get Too Excited Yet
Don’t get too excited yet, however, as the movie hasn’t even begun filming.
It is expected to begin filming in the summer of 2025 which means it would be released in 2026 or 2027.
Big Expectations
For The Goonies many fans, this is an exciting time. It is also a nerve-wracking one.
Will the sequel live up to the success of the first? The production team will try to ensure that it does, but there is a lot of pressure on them and Warner Bros to come up with something extra special.
Like a Family
At least when it comes to the chemistry of the original cast, there should be no problems.
As Corey Feldman revealed in his interview with Drew Barrymore; “I’m still close with every one of them… Like we are all still a family. It’s amazing.”
Spielberg “Like a Dad”
In the same interview, Feldman revealed that Spielberg was a father figure to him.
“He was literally like my everything because I didn’t have a dad. I didn’t have anybody to really lean on… and he was the guy that was really there for me.”
Something Special
It’s clear that both on and off the screen, The Goonies cast had something special.
It is to be hoped that the magic can be re-ignited 40 years on.
