Disney and Marvel Studio’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” just set an all time box office opening record for R rated films.
The film, the first ever rated R film ever released by either studio, raked in $211 million domestically, handily breaking the previous record. Let’s check out the rest of the top 10 domestic box office openings for R-rated films!
“Deadpool” (2016)
In a meta twist befitting the movies themselves, turns out the record that “Deadpool & Wolverine” smashed was set by Deadpool himself!
20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool” made $132 million at the domestic box office in it’s opening weekend, a record setting amount for an R rated movie at the time.
“Deadpool 2” (2018)
And rounding out the top three spot is…more Deadpool!
Yes, the top three spots for all time domestic opening for an R-rated film all belong Deadpool. 20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool 2” fell just a tad short of it’s predecessor with a still impressive $125.5 million opening weekend.
“It” (2017)
One of the most highly anticipated horror movies in the last decade, it is no wonder that Warner Bros. Studios’ “It” is the first non-Deadpool film on our list.
Pennywise the Clown and “It” scared up $123 million in it’s opening weekend.
“Joker” (2019)
The role that won Joaquin Phoenix the Academy Award for Best Actor, Warner Bros. Studio’s “Joker” was one of the most talked about films of 2019, well before it was even released.
The controversy surrounding the film, some thought that it may inspire an uprising of violent young men, ultimately only helped the film’s box office opening. “Joker” made $96 million in its opening weekend
“The Matrix Reloaded” (2003)
The oldest film on our list, people had been anticipating Warner Bros. Studio’s “The Matrix Reloaded” since the credits rolled on it’s predecessor, “The Matrix.”
This anticipation is no doubt why “The Matrix Reloaded” made $92 million in it’s opening weekend, setting a record at the time for R rated film openings.
“It Chapter Two” (2019)
The massive success of the first “It” two years before all but ensured that the film’s sequel would be a success. And while this installment did not fare as well with critics, it still made quite a bit at the box office.
The third and final clown based movie on our list, “It Chapter Two” opened with $91 million at the domestic box office.
Logan
Deadpool’s counterpart in “Deadpool & Wolverine” finally shows back up on our list with 20th Century Fox’s much more tonally serious “Logan.”
“Logan,” thought at the time to be Hugh Jackman’s final time playing the titular character, made $88 million in it’s opening weekend.
“The Hangover Part II” (2011)
Proving that audiences were desperate for another crazy trip with Phil, Alan, and the gang, Warner Bros. Studio’s “The Hangover Part II” had a huge opening weekend for an R-Rated comedy.
“The Hangover Part II” made $86 million in its opening weekend.
“Fifty Shades Of Grey” (2015)
Finishing our list is an adaptation of an incredibly popular novel that could never have been adapted into anything but a R rated film.
E.L. James’ steamy novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” became a national sensation, and so too did its film adaptation. Universal Picture’s “Fifty Shades Of Grey” made $85 million in its opening weekend.
