Khyree Jackson was a prmising young cornerback signed to the Minnesota Vikings just two months ago.
His NFL profile lists him as imposing in size and strength, with some technique still to work on but with much to play for. He would have been one to watch over the next few years.
Such a Young Age
Khyree Jackson was only twenty-four years old and had his whole life ahead of him.
Jackson’s coach is devastated by the death, he said: “Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and our team… In our short time together, it was evident Khyree was going to develop into a tremendous professional football player, but what was more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words.”
Three People Died
Three people died in the crash which happened at high speed on Pennsylvania Avenue in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
The two people travelling with Jackson were his high school football teammates, they were Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton.
A Fatal Lane Change
The three friends were travelling in a Dodge Charger in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A silver Infiniti was heading northbound and attempted to change lanes at high speed.
Fatal Collision
The silver Infiniti, driven by one Cori Clingman, ploughed into the Charger containing Jackson and his friends.
The Charger was knocked off the road and struck multiple tree stumps before finally coming to a stop.
Dead at the Scene
Khyree Jackson was the front passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
His friend, Hazel, who was driving the car, was also pronounced dead at the scene. The other passenger, Lytton, was taken to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Alcohol was Involved
According to the police, alcohol may have been involved in the crash.
Cori Clingman had two passengers in her car, neither were injured. Charges are pending.
Pandemic Disruption
Although Jackson was a promising player, his route into professional football was slower than is usual.
This was partly because the pandemic held things up at a crucial time. Jackson quit college and went to work in a grocery store where he was employee of the month at least once.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes have poured in for Jackson from different sources.
Including this from Oregon Ducks’ Head Coach on X: “RIP Khyree… Love you @Real\_Khyree. at a loss for words. I will miss your smile. Great player better person.”
Statement from Vikings Owners
The owners of the Vikings, Mark and Zygi Wilf released a statement.
They wrote: “We are deeply saddened by the news of Khyree’s passing. Khyree had an extremely bright future ahead of him as a player, and it was clear he was dedicated to being a tremendous person who made a positive difference in people’s lives.”
