We’re barely halfway through 2024, and yet we’ve already been gifted an array of highly anticipated movies, including Dune: Part Two, Challengers and The Outrun.
The website Letterboxd allows millions of moviegoers to rate and review new releases, and a new list from the site has revealed the highest-rated movies of 2024 so far. Keep reading to find out what they are.
#8: Anora
The eighth best-received movie released this year is Anora. The movie – directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, Karren Karaglian, and Mark Eydelshteyn – has an average rating of 4.1 stars out of 5.
The film summary on Letterboxd says that the titular character “gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.”
#7: Daughters
This 2024 documentary film was directed by Angela Patton and Natalie Rae, and enjoys an average rating of 4.1/5 based on over 1,000 ratings.
The movie summary reads, “Four young girls prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers, as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C., jail.”
#6: Sing Sing
Released mere days ago in US cinemas via A24, “Sing Sing” is a drama directed by Greg Kwedar which features Colman Domingo and Paul Raci. The movie enjoys an average rating of 4.2 stars.
The movie summary reads, “Divine G, imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men.”
#5: The Count of Monte-Cristo
This 2024 movie has tens of thousands of reviews on Letterboxd and has received an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences. The cast includes Pierre Niney, Bastien Bouillon and Anais Demoustier.
The movie summary says, “Edmond Dantes becomes the target of a sinister plot and is arrested on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit. After 14 years in the island prison of Château d’If, he manages a daring escape. #4: How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies
This movie – starring Billkin Putthipong Assaratanakul and directed by Pat Boonnitipat – has an average rating of 4.2/5 based off over 20,000 ratings.
The movie concerns, “A man quits work to care for dying grandmother, motivated by her fortune. He schemes to win her favor before she passes.”
#3: Hundreds of Beavers
This comedy movie, inspired by the slapstick comedy of the 1920s and 30s, has earned an average of 4.2 stars. It was directed by Mike Cheslik.
“In the 19th century, a drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero and become North America’s greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers,” reads the film summary.
#2: Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal
This documentary examines “The story behind one of the most revered and mysterious characters in WWE history and the man himself, Windham Rotunda, [who] has never been documented, until now.”
Directed by Steve Conoscenti, this documentary has an average rating of 4.2/5.
#1: Dune: Part Two
This follow-up to 2021’s “Dune” was directed by Denis Villeneuve and features Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. Earning over one million ratings, the film has an average rating of 4.5 stars/5.
The movie summary reads, “Follow the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Other highly rated films released this year include “Challengers” – starring Josh O’Connor, Mike Faist, and Zendaya – which has an average rating of 4.0, and The Outrun – featuring Saoirse Ronan – which has an average rating of 3.7.
In 2023, the highest-rated movie of the year was Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (4.4/5), while in 2022, it was Everything Everywhere All at Once (4.3/5).
