A major streaming service is rolling out a new-look dashboard that in a major shake-up of their familiar movie and TV browsing screen.
The change, developed in part using a generative AI model, is part of a suite of different updates that will hit apps and websites today across the world.
Fix a Common Issue
One of the issues most familiar with users of streaming services is related to the vast libraries of content presented to them.
This can lead to ‘decision paralysis’, in which, rather than time being spent watching movies or TV, it is instead spent surfing through content looking for something to watch.
Streaming Services Ever-Changing UI
Streaming services regularly look to update both their content and how the content is presented through their website and apps.
For example, Netflix, the most popular streaming service right now, has teased an update to its user interface (UI), which will arrive in the next few weeks.
Streaming Popularity Continues to Increase
While more streaming services have been developed in recent years, increasing competition in the sector, streaming as a whole continues to go from strength to strength.
The most recent figures show that, in 2024, there are around 1.8 billion active streaming memberships.
Amazon Trail Netflix
Although Amazon is dominant in the online shopping sector, in streaming, at least for the time being, they must play second fiddle to Netflix and Disney+.
Netflix currently has around 260 million subscribers, while Disney+ has 157 million and Amazon Prime trail behind with 117 million.
Amazon Planning Shake-up
Perhaps in an attempt to gain some ground on the market leaders, Amazon Prime rolled out major changes to the way in which they deliver their streaming services.
Part of this will be an update to the UI, which should make it easier for users to interact with and find what they are looking for.
Prime Tab
Some may argue that this feature should have been in place for day 1, but Amazon have belatedly introduced a ‘Prime’ tab.
The Prime tab allows the user to see solely the shows that are contained within their Amazon Prime subscription, rather than them being mixed in with shows from other services such as Paramount+.
Multi-Tabbing
In addition to the Prime tab, users can customize the screen to show tabs for the other services they may have a subscription to.
The services that can be bundled in with Amazon Prime include Max, Crunchyroll and Paramount+.
Easier Subscription Management
In addition to seeing subscriptions in separate tabs, the update will allow for easier management and subscription to those services in the first place.
The Amazon Prime app and website hosts, at least in the US, to over 100 different subscription services.
AI Development?
Amazon also boasts, in their press release, of improvements to their recommendation system, available in the new “Made For You” section.
This recommendation system was built using Amazon tools including, in part, an in-house generative AI model.
